The Side Effects of Boswellia Serrata Extract

  • Gut Health Herbs & Compounds

Boswellia serrata extract is a resin-derived supplement widely used for its anti-inflammatory benefits, particularly to support joint pain, swelling, and general inflammation. The active ingredients, boswellic acids, have been indicated as potential antagonists for the inflammatory pathway, particularly in reducing the accumulation of NF-κB, a prominent pro-inflammatory cytokine. Patients experiencing joint pain, either as an extra-manifestation of IBD or diverticulitis, or even those experiencing arthritis-like symptoms, can benefit from the soothing effect of the Boswellia serrata contained in Agile, Evinature’s formula. Its combinatory curcumin and Boswellia-based protocol is intended to relieve joint pain and inflammation-based swelling, often associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

How to use Boswellia Extract Safely

While Boswellia is generally considered safe, knowing even the minimal risks involved is important to make sure that you are reaping all of the benefits and none of the less-desired effects of the resin-based extract.

Dosage differs between patients and their physiological makeup. Even between different types of arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation recommends vastly different quantities of Boswellia serrata (100mg for OA and 1200mg for RA). If you plan to take Boswellia for joint pain, it is important to consult with your doctor to ensure you take the amount that is right for you, and to monitor for side effects.

It is essential to ensure you are taking Boswellia under the supervision of a doctor or medical professional in the field, and you track side effects for the duration of taking the supplement.

Evinature provides free consultation through our Clinic Support Team and offers guidance on Boswellia side effects.

Ways to Take Boswellia serrata Extract

There are a number of different methods of taking Boswellia, but capsules or tablets are the most common and available. It is important to make sure that your supplier provides third-party quality control and testing to make sure that your extract does not contain impurities.

There are also essential oils that contain Boswellia, which many use to apply directly to the site of the inflammation. It is important to apply to a small area of skin to ensure you do not have an allergic reaction to the oil before using it regularly.

Common Side Effects

Most users tolerate Boswellia well, but mild side effects can include:

Digestive issues:

Usually, these occur in the form of nausea, stomach pain, acid reflux, heartburn, and diarrhea. Often, in order to combat these side effects, Boswellia is given together in a curcumin/Boswellia mixture, such as in Evinature’s Agile formula.

Headache, general weakness:

Due to the change Boswellia causes in how the body processes excess inflammation, it can also impact pathways leading to slight fatigue and causing mild headaches.

Skin reactions:

Rashes or itching can result from topical use or allergic dermatitis.

Who Shouldn’t Take Boswellia?

Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals: While small amounts used as food flavoring may be safe, higher medicinal doses are not recommended due to potential uterine stimulation and lack of safety data.

Individuals with liver problems: No confirmed liver damage has been tied to Boswellia, but caution is advised with very high doses until more data is available.

Those with severe kidney or electrolyte disorders: High-dose use in individuals prone to electrolyte imbalances should consult with a doctor before taking Boswellia, and should closely monitor their condition while taking this supplement.

Interactions and Special Conditions

  • NSAIDs or other anti-inflammatories: Boswellia may have additive effects on these medications, and while this could be beneficial, it could also interfere with the overall efficacy of these medications or their metabolism in the body. Alternatively, there is potential that they could increase bleeding risk or other side effects—so consult a healthcare provider with concerns.
  • Anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications: Use of these medications together with Boswellia could amplify bleeding risk due to Boswellia’s potential effects on platelet aggregation.
  • Liver-metabolized medications: More data is required to understand the specific role of Boswellia processing in the liver; therefore, it is possible that Boswellia could impact medications affecting liver function. Caution should be taken, and consultation with a medical professional is advised.
  • Asthma or chronic respiratory conditions: Preliminary studies show some benefit, but Boswellia should not replace prescribed asthma treatments.
