The holidays are meant to be joyful, but when you’re living with long-term gut challenges, they can also bring a mix of anxiety and exhaustion. Between rich foods, travel, disrupted routines, and the pressure to “just enjoy yourself,” it can feel like a minefield for your digestion.
I’ve been navigating digestive challenges since I was 20, and over the years, I’ve learned that staying well during the holidays isn’t about perfection. It’s about preparation and giving yourself grace.
Here are a few things that have helped both me and my daughter, Kalee, move through the season with more confidence, comfort, and calm.
1. Bring Something You Can Eat — and Enjoy It
Holiday dinners used to stress me out. Now, I always bring at least one dish I know I can enjoy. It helps me relax instead of worrying about food options.
2. Stay Hydrated and Don’t Forget Electrolytes
When you live with gut sensitivities, it’s easy to get dehydrated — and when that happens, everything feels harder. Keeping electrolytes on hand keeps me steady and energized.

3. Pack Travel Snacks
Flights, road trips, shopping days — unpredictable food options are part of the season. Snacks that sit well with your gut make a huge difference.

4. Support Your Nervous System
Your gut and brain are deeply connected. Simple practices like slow breathing, grounding, or pausing before meals help your body shift into a calmer state.
5. Prioritize Rest
Sleep is one of the most powerful tools for feeling well. Keeping your bedtime routine as consistent as possible helps your body stay balanced.
6. Give Yourself Permission to Say No
Sometimes the best thing you can do is say no — no to extra events, no to overcommitting, no to guilt.

The Heart of It All
Kalee and I remind each other that this season isn’t about doing it perfectly — it’s about doing it intentionally.
